How to choose a UPS or rack PDU for your business

Start with the equipment you need to protect, its peak power consumption and the time needed to shut down safely or bridge a short outage. Then check the electrical installation, not just the product’s VA rating.

UPS sizing: watts, VA and headroom

Watts describe real power; VA describe apparent power. Both UPS limits must cover your equipment. Our calculator uses your equipment power factor and a 75% maximum planning load to leave capacity headroom. Replace equipment estimates with measured or manufacturer-specified peak consumption.

Backup time for servers and networks

A higher VA rating does not guarantee a specific number of minutes. Runtime depends on load, battery configuration, temperature and battery condition. Use the manufacturer’s runtime curve for the exact model, especially when planning graceful server shutdown or keeping PoE switches and IP phones online.

120 V, 208 V, 220 V, 230 V or 240 V?

Choose the nominal input voltage that matches your site. A wide operating input range is not proof of nominal compatibility. Verify output voltage, plug type, branch circuit, phase and required amperage with the manufacturer or your installer before ordering.

Rack PDUs: distribution, not battery backup

A PDU distributes power to several devices. Compare basic, metered, monitored or switched models according to the features specified for each product. Check rack height, mounting orientation, input connector and output receptacles. A PDU does not replace an UPS.

For a warehouse, server room, multi-site deployment or healthcare installation, FleetNetwork can help assess the load, installation constraints and backup requirements. When needed, we bring the manufacturer into the technical discussion to validate the proposed configuration.

UPS and PDU selection: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a UPS and a PDU?

An UPS provides battery backup during a power interruption. A PDU distributes electrical power to connected equipment and does not provide battery backup by itself. Many rack installations use both.

How many VA do I need for my equipment?

Divide your equipment load in watts by its power factor to estimate VA. Check both the UPS watt and VA ratings. Our calculator then sizes both ratings for a 75% maximum planning load; the final choice also requires electrical and runtime validation.

Will a 1500 VA UPS run my server for 30 minutes?

The VA rating alone cannot answer this. Check the exact model’s manufacturer runtime curve at your server’s load, including any external battery configuration. Published half-load and full-load times are reference points, not a universal 30-minute guarantee.

Does a PoE switch need a larger UPS?

Include the switch’s own consumption and the power supplied to phones, cameras or access points through PoE. Avoid counting those powered devices twice. Use the expected peak PoE demand and verify both the UPS watt and VA limits.

Can FleetNetwork help with a larger power installation?

Yes. Share your equipment list, site voltage, desired backup time and installation constraints for personalized advice and a quote. When needed, FleetNetwork involves the manufacturer to validate the proposed configuration. Critical medical and life-safety applications require dedicated technical validation and approved equipment.
